Cristiano Ronaldo’s quest for World Cup glory suffered an early setback as the Democratic Republic of Congo earned a historic 1-1 draw against Portugal in their Group K opener on Wednesday.
Playing in their first FIFA World Cup since 1974, when they competed as Zaire, DR Congo delivered a spirited performance to secure the nation’s first-ever point at the global showpiece.
Portugal made a dream start when midfielder João Neves headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute, putting Roberto Martinez’s side ahead. However, despite dominating possession, the Portuguese failed to capitalize on their control.
The African side responded just before halftime through Yoane Wissa, whose powerful header beat Diogo Costa and sparked jubilant celebrations among Congolese players and supporters. The goal also marked DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal.
Much of the spotlight was on 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, appearing in a record-equalling sixth World Cup. But the Portuguese captain struggled to influence the match and was unable to convert the few opportunities that came his way.
DR Congo continued to impress after the break, with veteran striker Cédric Bakambu coming close to scoring a winner when his effort struck the post. Portugal thought they had regained the lead through João Cancelo’s spectacular overhead kick, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Ronaldo was presented with two late chances by Francisco Conceição, but on both occasions the legendary forward fired wide, summing up a frustrating evening for Portugal.
The result represents a landmark achievement for DR Congo, whose preparations for the tournament were complicated by the Ebola outbreak back home. Meanwhile, Portugal were left disappointed after failing to secure all three points in their opening fixture.
With the draw, Group K remains wide open as DR Congo celebrate a memorable chapter in their football history.
