Lionel Messi announces retirement from Argentina National Team

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 21-year career with the Argentina national team to an end.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain was his final appearance in an international tournament for La Albiceleste. Messi will also step down as captain of the national team.

In a statement shared with his millions of followers on Instagram, Messi said the decision was painful but that he believes the time has come to close the chapter.

“I am retiring from the national team. It was a decision that hurt and hurts in my soul, but I understand that this is the moment,” Messi said.

The Argentine superstar added that he had always given everything for the national team and believed younger players deserved the opportunity to establish themselves.

Messi revealed that he had effectively made the decision on July 21, two days after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat. He also linked the decision to the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi.

A Legendary International Career

Messi finishes his Argentina career with staggering numbers. He made 207 appearances, scored 125 goals and provided 68 assists, becoming the most influential player in the country’s history.

His international journey began as an 18-year-old at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he announced himself on the biggest stage with a goal and an assist.

After years of heartbreak, including defeats in the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals, Messi eventually enjoyed an unprecedented period of success with Argentina.

He led Argentina to the 2021 Copa America, ending the country’s 28-year major-trophy drought, before successfully defending the title at the 2024 Copa America.

But the defining moment of his international career came at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Messi scored seven goals during the tournament and guided Argentina past France in a dramatic final, finally lifting the World Cup trophy that had eluded him throughout his career. He was named both player of the tournament and man of the match in the final.

Messi Leaves at the Top

Even at 39, Messi remained a decisive figure at the 2026 World Cup. He featured in eight matches, scoring eight goals and providing four assists as Argentina reached another World Cup final. Despite ultimately losing to Spain, Messi once again demonstrated that he could still perform at the highest level.

His decision therefore appears to be based not on an inability to compete, but on his belief that the time has come for Argentina’s next generation to take centre stage.

Argentina will now begin life without its legendary captain, with players such as Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez and young talents including Nico Paz expected to play increasingly important roles.

Messi is not retiring from professional football altogether. He remains under contract with Inter Miami until the end of 2028 and could continue his club career in Major League Soccer.

For Argentina, however, an era has officially come to an end.
