Former Indian World Cup–winning captain Kapil Dev has called for greater national unity and restraint, urging public figures to support their country’s official policies rather than inflaming public sentiment with personal opinions.
Speaking in a recent news interview, Kapil Dev stressed that individuals with influence must avoid confusing the public by contradicting state decisions.
“Whatever the policy of the country is, people like us should stand by it. When people like us start giving statements, you are confusing the people,” he said.
“Let’s stand by our government. Let’s stand by our cricket board. Whether they are right or wrong, time will tell.”
Reflecting on historic India–Pakistan cricket encounters, Kapil Dev acknowledged that aggression and verbal exchanges were common in the past but emphasized that things have now intensified beyond earlier levels.
He recalled how language barriers once limited the impact of on-field abuse, noting that many players didn’t even fully understand the insults being hurled.
“Earlier, not everyone could understand what the other side was saying. Now everyone understands everything — and it’s gone much deeper.”
Kapil Dev also expressed concern over what he sees as rising aggression among younger players, comparing it with the disciplined approach taught by seniors in his era.
“We were taught by our seniors that instead of abusing, let your bat and ball talk,” he said.
“There is no point in abusing — performance should speak.”
The cricket legend’s comments underline a broader message: respect institutions, control emotions, and let skill—not hostility—define the game.
