IPL 2025 format and rules

Each team will play 14 matches in the tournament's group stage: twice against teams in their group and one additional team from the other group. They will also play once against the remaining four teams in the other group. The top four teams make it to the playoffs, where Qualifier 1 pits the top two teams against each other, and the Eliminator pits the third and fourth teams. The team that wins Qualifier 1 advances to the final, while the team that loses gets another chance. In Qualifier 2, the team that lost Qualifier 1 will play against the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of this match will advance to the final. There are 74 matches in the tournament, with plans to make it 84 in the next two seasons.

IPL 2025 schedule

The tentative dates for the IPL seasons from 2025 to 2027 were shared with the franchises before the 2025 auction, with the 2025 edition initially set for March 14 to May 25. However, to allow for a gap of two weeks following the ICC Champions Trophy final on March 9, the start date was moved to March 21 in January 2025. This adjustment caused an overlap with the 2025 Pakistan Super League, which was rescheduled to run from April 11 to May 25.

The BCCI confirmed after the Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on January 12 that the season opener would take place on 22 March at Eden Gardens, featuring the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The final will be held in Kolkata, with Hyderabad hosting Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Qualifier 2 and the championship match will take place in Kolkata.
