India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling Hockey World Cup clash on Wednesday to secure their place in the second stage of the tournament.

India dominated the opening quarter and quickly established control, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner in the fifth minute before Abhishek doubled the advantage with a superb individual field goal in the 11th minute.

Harmanpreet struck again in the 21st minute to put India 3-0 ahead, but Pakistan responded immediately. Hannan Shahid pulled one back in the 22nd minute before Abhishek restored India’s three-goal advantage just two minutes later.

Pakistan refused to surrender, with Sufyan Khan scoring from a penalty corner in the 24th minute to make it 4-2 at half-time.

India extended their lead again early in the second half when Hardik converted a penalty stroke in the 35th minute. Pakistan continued to push forward and eventually reduced the deficit when Hannan Shahid scored again in the 46th minute, making it 5-3.

The final quarter turned into a tense battle as Pakistan piled on the pressure. India were forced to defend deep after Arjun Lallage received a yellow card, but the Indian defence managed to withstand Pakistan’s late surge.

Pakistan earned opportunities, including a penalty corner, but struggled to convert them as India successfully managed the closing stages.

The final hooter confirmed India’s victory, with the result sending them through to the second stage of the Hockey World Cup while eliminating Pakistan from the tournament.

For India, Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek were the standout performers, while Pakistan showed tremendous fighting spirit after falling three goals behind early in the contest.
