Yuvraj Singh’s father says Imran Khan would have been honoured with Bharat Ratna in India
Yograj Singh, father of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, has expressed concern over the treatment of former Pakistan Prime Minister and legendary cricketer Imran Khan, saying he would have been honoured with India’s highest civilian award had he been in India.
Speaking during an interview, Yograj recalled his interactions with Imran Khan and described him as a person who deserved far greater respect.
“Paaji, the treatment that is being given to Imran Khan in our neighbouring country, Pakistan, I would like you to tell us how do you feel about it?” the host asked Yograj, also referring to the time he had spent with Imran.
Responding, Yograj said that Imran Khan would have been regarded very differently in India.
“If Imran Khan was in India, he would have been crowned as the pride of India,” Yograj said.
He questioned the treatment of a man who had once been elected to lead Pakistan, saying, “A man who you wanted to make the Prime Minister of your country, you put him in jail and put him on the verge of death.”
Yograj went on to say that, had Imran been in India, he believed he would have received the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
“I am surprised that for such a man, if he was in India, he would have got the highest award in his life. Bharat Ratna,” he said.
Yograj became emotional while speaking about Imran and said that the situation made him reflect on the treatment of good people.
“A few tears are running down my eyes for him,” he said, before adding that he viewed the situation through a spiritual lens.
He also referred to the concept of “Kalyug”, describing it as a dark period in which, according to his interpretation, good people can face suffering.
Concluding his remarks, Yograj stressed religious unity, saying: “Waheguru, Allah and God are one.”
Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to its 1992 World Cup triumph, later entered politics and became Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2018. His political career has since been marked by legal cases, imprisonment and a prolonged political confrontation with the country’s establishment.
