Peshawar Zalmi head coach Ottis Gibson has thrown his support behind Pakistan’s premier batter Babar Azam, urging him to ignore social media criticism and rediscover the fearless approach that once made him one of the world’s most consistent performers.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming Pakistan Super League season, Gibson acknowledged the intense scrutiny Babar faces, particularly over his strike rate and recent performances, but insisted that external noise could be detrimental to his game.
“I don’t think there’s anything specific he needs to work on technically,” Gibson said. “What he needs is to stay away from the pressure created by social media. If he carries that criticism with him onto the field, it will only affect him negatively.”
Babar, who has often found himself at the center of debates surrounding modern T20 batting demands, has been under increased pressure from fans and analysts alike. However, Gibson believes the solution lies not in overhauling his technique, but in simplifying his mindset.
The former West Indies fast bowler advised Babar to focus on preparation and clarity of role, particularly as an opening batter. “Practice for the role you’re going to play. If you’re opening, work with the new ball, build partnerships, and understand match situations. Cricket is not played in isolation—you’re always batting with a partner,” he explained.
Gibson also emphasized the importance of reading the game situation rather than overthinking external expectations. “The scoreboard tells you everything—whether you’re chasing 180 or 190, you know what needs to be done. He doesn’t need anyone to tell him how to bat. He already knows that.”
In a heartfelt note, Gibson reflected on Babar’s early days, suggesting a return to his natural instincts could unlock his best form. “If we can get him back to the mindset he had when he first made his debut—free, confident, and expressive—I’m sure there’s still an outstanding cricketer in there.”
He added that the coaching staff, including Misbah-ul-Haq, will play a crucial role in helping Babar regain that rhythm. “Our job is to support him and bring that side of his game out again.”
With PSL 2026 approaching and expectations mounting, all eyes will be on Babar Azam—not just for runs, but for how he responds to the noise around him. Gibson, however, remains confident that the star batter has everything it takes to rise above the criticism once again.
