Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has sparked fresh controversy after appearing to reverse his stance within 24 hours regarding his criticism of Pakistan Cricket Board leadership and senior players.

Morning Firestorm on Indian TV

While speaking to an Indian news channel earlier in the day, Akhtar delivered scathing remarks that were widely interpreted as indirect criticism of Mohsin Naqvi, the current Chairman of the PCB.

Without naming him in every instance, Akhtar suggested that when “illiterate and incompetent people” with no connection to cricket are put in charge of the board, Pakistan cricket is destined to decline. His comments quickly went viral, with many believing his primary target was the PCB chairman.

Akhtar also questioned the performances of senior players. Referring to former captain Babar Azam, he asked what kind of top player fails to deliver in big matches — a statement that reignited debate over Babar’s record in high-pressure games.

He did not spare Pakistan’s pace attack either. In remarks about Shaheen Afridi, Akhtar questioned the “superstar” label, criticizing his ability to consistently bowl full spells in crucial matches.

The tone of the interview was blunt, confrontational, and widely perceived as a direct attack on PCB leadership, particularly Mohsin Naqvi.

Night-Time Clarification — A Complete U-Turn?

However, later that night, Akhtar appeared on a Pakistani news channel and shifted his position dramatically.

When asked why he spoke so harshly about Mohsin Naqvi, Akhtar insisted he had been misunderstood. He clarified that his criticism was not aimed at the PCB chairman but rather at officials associated with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

He stated that he holds respect for Mohsin Naqvi and even claimed that during the Indian interview, he defended the PCB chairman when the anchor criticized him.

At the same time, Akhtar admitted to having one disappointment with Naqvi — the decision to withdraw a previously suggested boycott stance regarding a match against India. According to Akhtar, if such a strong decision had been announced, it should have been maintained, as he believed the nation was standing behind it. The reversal, he suggested, projected inconsistency.

Social Media Reacts

The back-to-back interviews have triggered intense debate. Critics argue that Akhtar’s shift in tone amounts to a clear U-turn, while supporters believe his words were misinterpreted in the first place.

Regardless of interpretation, the episode once again highlights Shoaib Akhtar’s ability to dominate headlines — both for his outspoken views and the controversies that often follow.
