Cricket legend Shoaib Akhtar stirred debate on social media after delivering a sarcastic remark following India national cricket team’s historic victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
India defeated New Zealand in the tournament final to successfully defend their title, becoming the first team in history to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the only team to lift the trophy three times. The victory also made India the first nation to win a T20 World Cup on home soil, marking another milestone in the country’s cricketing history.
Soon after the match, former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar made a tongue-in-cheek comment while discussing India’s dominance in the tournament.
“India is like that rich kid who invites all the poor kids in the neighborhood and says, ‘Come, let’s play cricket — but only I’m allowed to win,’” Akhtar said, a remark that quickly went viral across cricketing circles.
While some fans interpreted the statement as criticism of the competitive imbalance in modern cricket, others viewed it as a humorous acknowledgement of India’s current supremacy in the shortest format.
India’s triumph capped a dominant campaign in the tournament, with their batting depth, disciplined bowling attack, and strong bench strength proving decisive throughout the competition. The victory further cemented India’s status as the most successful team in T20 World Cup history.
Meanwhile, New Zealand once again finished as runners-up in a global event, earning praise for their consistency but falling short in the final hurdle.
Akhtar’s remark added an extra layer of spice to the celebrations, reflecting the intense rivalry and passionate debates that continue to define international cricket.
