The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that no decision has been made yet regarding the ODI captain for One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa.
According to a PCB spokesperson, head coach Mike Hesson has formally written to Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, recommending that a joint meeting of the Selection Committee and the Advisory Committee be held to finalise the ODI captaincy.
Chairman Naqvi has forwarded the recommendation to the relevant committees, which are scheduled to meet on October 20. A final announcement is expected following this meeting.

Who’s in the running?
Although PCB has not publicly announced a shortlist, sources suggest that the race is heating up between several experienced names:
Shaheen Shah Afridi – A dynamic fast bowler with prior captaincy experience in T20s; seen as an aggressive, expressive leader.
Babar Azam – Former captain across all formats, Babar’s calm leadership and consistent batting performances keep him in strong contention.
Shan Masood – The current Test captain and a composed figure who brings domestic and international leadership experience.
Mohammad Rizwan – Known for his discipline and resilience, Rizwan has previously served as vice-captain and enjoys widespread respect.
Among the frontrunners, Rizwan and Babar are said to have the strongest backing from senior players and some members of the selection panel, while others are advocating for a more aggressive approach under Shaheen or Shadab. Shan Masood is seen as a stabilising choice, especially for series planning and long-term team development.
PCB to decide ODI captain for series against South Africa on October 20
The ODI captaincy decision carries weight not just for this series, but also as a marker for Pakistan’s preparation towards upcoming ICC tournaments. PCB officials are reportedly looking for someone who can lead with consistency, command dressing room trust, and handle external pressure.
The committee meeting on October 20 is expected to determine the captain, who will then be announced alongside the full ODI squad for the South Africa series.
