Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto guided a composed recovery as the hosts bounced back from early trouble on Day 1 of the first Test against Pakistan, turning a shaky start into a position of stability by the end of the opening session.

Pakistan made an ideal start after winning the early exchanges. Shaheen Afridi struck first, removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy with movement off the pitch, while Mohammad Rizwan completed a sharp catch behind the stumps. Soon after, Hasan Ali added another wicket as Shadman Islam edged one behind, leaving Bangladesh under pressure at 31/2.

At that stage, Pakistan looked firmly in control, with conditions favoring their pace attack. However, Bangladesh responded with discipline rather than desperation.

Shanto, alongside Mominul Haque, steadied the innings with a crucial partnership that shifted momentum. The duo focused on building their innings patiently—leaving deliveries outside off, rotating the strike, and capitalizing on loose balls. Their measured approach gradually frustrated Pakistan’s bowlers, who were unable to find the breakthrough despite consistent efforts.

Shanto grew in confidence after settling in, playing elegant strokes including a standout drive through extra cover that energized the crowd. Haque, at the other end, anchored the innings with a calm and controlled approach.

By the end of the session, Bangladesh had reached 104/2 in 29 overs, with Haque unbeaten on 31 off 67 balls and Shanto on 42 from 58 deliveries. Their partnership not only stabilized the innings but also shifted the pressure back onto Pakistan.

Despite the turnaround, Pakistan’s bowlers had shown discipline early on. Mohammad Abbas maintained tight lines and controlled the run flow, while Hasan Ali complemented him with aggressive spells. Salman Ali Agha also contributed with a few probing overs.

However, as the partnership grew, Pakistan’s intensity appeared to dip. Field placements became more defensive, and the sense of urgency faded as Bangladesh began to dictate terms.

Pakistan may reflect on a missed opportunity to capitalize on early conditions that favored their bowlers. Another wicket before the break could have exposed Bangladesh’s middle order much sooner.

Instead, Bangladesh walked off with renewed confidence, having turned the contest into a balanced affair. With momentum shifting and both sides showing glimpses of control, the opening day promises a closely fought battle as the Test progresses.
