LAHORE: Senior cricket journalist Saleem Khaliq has reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is exploring an ambitious plan to construct a new cricket stadium in Jeddah, with the long-term aim of hosting matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the Kingdom.
According to the report, the PCB has already received initial approval from its governing board to move forward with an expression of interest. However, the project remains in its early stages, with key aspects such as financial structuring, partnerships, and final agreements yet to be finalized.
The development is part of PCB’s broader strategy to globalize the PSL brand and tap into emerging cricket markets. Saudi Arabia has witnessed a steady rise in cricket interest in recent years, largely due to its growing expatriate population and increased institutional support for the sport.
Sources indicate that discussions have been initiated with the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation (SACF), which was established in 2020 and has since played a key role in organizing and promoting cricket across the Kingdom.
The idea of hosting PSL matches outside Pakistan is not new. The tournament has previously been staged in the UAE, where venues in Dubai and Abu Dhabi successfully hosted multiple editions during challenging periods. A potential venue in Jeddah could provide the league with another strategic offshore base.
The report also recalls PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s visit to Saudi Arabia in December 2024, where he held talks with Prince Saud bin Mishal Al-Saud. Among the key topics discussed were the development of cricket infrastructure and long-term collaboration to grow the sport in the region.
While the proposal signals a bold step toward expanding Pakistan cricket’s footprint internationally, officials caution that the project is still in a preliminary phase. Further approvals, feasibility studies, and formal agreements will determine whether the plan materializes into a functional venue capable of hosting PSL fixtures.
If realized, the Jeddah stadium could mark a significant milestone in the PSL’s evolution, opening doors to new audiences and commercial opportunities in the Middle East.
