LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a revamped red-ball coaching setup for the upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh, appointing former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as head coach.

Sarfaraz, one of Pakistan’s most successful captains in recent history, steps into the role with an impressive leadership résumé. He famously led Pakistan to the ICC Champions Trophy title in 2017 and had earlier guided the country to victory in the ICC U19 World Cup in 2006. More recently, he has been actively involved in player development, serving as mentor and manager for Pakistan U19 and Pakistan Shaheens squads.

The board has also named Asad Shafiq as batting coach for the tour. A dependable figure in Pakistan’s middle order during his playing days, Asad represented the country in 147 international matches, including 77 Tests, amassing over 6,000 runs with multiple centuries to his name.

Former fast bowler Umar Gul has been appointed as the bowling coach. Known for his effectiveness across formats, particularly in red-ball cricket, Umar claimed 427 international wickets and brings valuable experience in managing pace resources.

The appointments reflect the PCB’s intent to strengthen its red-ball structure with experienced former players who understand the demands of international cricket, especially in challenging overseas conditions like Bangladesh.

The coaching staff will take charge during the two-match Test series in Bangladesh next month, working closely with the squad to deliver a strong performance in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
