A fresh debate around Pakistan’s wicketkeeping slot has emerged after former captain Rashid Latif publicly questioned the continued backing of Mohammad Rizwan over rising talent Rohail Nazir.
Speaking during a recent discussion, Latif highlighted Rohail’s consistent performances in domestic cricket over the past few years, arguing that the young wicketkeeper-batter has done enough to warrant a proper opportunity at the international level. “Rohail Nazir has proved himself performing well in the past five years. He should have been given a chance,” Latif stated, adding that Rizwan has continued to receive strong backing from the team management.
The comments come at a time when Pakistan’s team selections are under scrutiny, especially with upcoming international commitments. Latif further suggested that opportunities for Rohail could depend on team results, remarking that a poor series outcome—such as a loss against Bangladesh—might force selectors to reconsider their options.
Mohammad Rizwan has been a mainstay in Pakistan’s setup across formats, delivering several match-winning performances and maintaining a reputation for consistency. However, critics argue that the team management should also invest in bench strength and provide exposure to emerging players like Rohail.
Rohail Nazir, known for his aggressive batting and leadership in youth cricket, has long been regarded as one of the country’s promising prospects. Despite his domestic success, he has struggled to break into the senior national side on a regular basis.
With competition intensifying and pressure mounting on selectors, the discussion sparked by Latif’s remarks adds another layer to Pakistan cricket’s ongoing debate: balancing experience with the need to groom future stars.
