BCCI Vice-president Rajiv Shukla has clarified that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no authority over the recent signing of Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed by Sunrisers Leeds.
Speaking about the development, Shukla stated that the matter does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Indian Premier League or the BCCI. According to him, the franchise’s decision concerns a separate overseas league in which the ownership group operates independently.

“If they do something, it is not our IPL. It is not their league. It does not come under our jurisdiction. It is not in our domain. They have done it for some foreign league where they are the owner, so it is not in our domain. We cannot do anything. They will have to take a call,” Shukla said.
The comments come amid discussions about cross-league ownership structures, where IPL franchise owners also operate teams in other international T20 competitions. These teams sometimes sign players who are not eligible to participate in the IPL due to various policies or geopolitical factors.
Abrar Ahmed, known for his mystery spin and strong performances in international cricket, has been gaining attention in franchise leagues around the world. His signing by the Sunrisers Leeds highlights how global T20 leagues continue to expand opportunities for players outside traditional domestic structures.
Shukla’s statement effectively distances the BCCI and the IPL from the move, emphasizing that decisions made by franchises in foreign leagues are outside the board’s regulatory control.
