Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan addressed the media in a press conference on Saturday, where he was asked about the surprising omission of Babar Azam from Pakistan’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.
Responding to the question, Rizwan said he was not in a position to explain the reasoning behind the decision and suggested that the selection committee should provide clarity on the matter. He pointed out that he was not part of the meetings in which the selectors discussed or finalized the squad.
“I honestly don’t know why Babar Azam was dropped from the ODI squad on the basis of his T20 performances,” Rizwan said. “I was not present in the meeting rooms where these decisions were taken. The selectors and the selection committee are the ones who should explain this, because they know the reasoning behind it.”
Rizwan further emphasized that it would not be appropriate for him to offer his personal opinion on a decision taken by the selectors. According to him, transparency from the selection panel would help clear the confusion surrounding the issue.
During the press conference, Rizwan was also asked about reports circulating in the media that Pakistani players faced a fine of Rs 50 lakh each for their disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The wicketkeeper-batter dismissed the reports as unconfirmed, stating that he had not received any official information regarding such a penalty.
“There has been a lot of talk about fines, but as far as I know, this is still a rumour,” Rizwan said. “Nothing has been confirmed, so I don’t want to comment on it.”
The press conference comes at a time when Pakistan cricket is under intense scrutiny following recent results and squad changes. With Babar Azam’s exclusion from the ODI squad sparking debate among fans and analysts, many are now waiting for the selection committee to publicly explain the decision.
