LA28 Olympic stadium ready for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles

Organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have released the official competition schedule, running from July 14 to July 30, marking the largest-ever Olympics with 11,200 athletes competing in 51 sports across 49 venues. The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games schedule highlights equality, inclusion, and exciting format changes for both athletes and fans.

For the first time, women will make up 50.5% of all participants, with every team sport featuring equal or more women’s teams than men’s. The opening day on July 15 will feature a record number of women’s finals, highlighted by the women’s 100 meters.

“We want to come out in these Games with a bang. We want to start day one with a showcase of the fastest females in the world,” said Shana Ferguson, LA28 Chief of Sport.

To accommodate the new format, women sprinters will run three 100m heats in one day, a move athletes have embraced. “When we presented it to the athletes that way, there was excitement,” said Janet Evans, LA28 Chief Athlete Officer.

In a major scheduling change, track and field will now take place in the first week, while swimming moves to the second, allowing swimmers to attend the opening ceremony. “You move to the second week. You have 38,000 people in the stands,” Evans noted.

The highly anticipated “Super Saturday” (July 29) will see 26 medal events across 23 sports, with champions crowned in athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, football, golf, swimming, and tennis.

Returning sports include baseball (beginning July 13 at Dodger Stadium), softball, and cricket, which rejoins the Olympics after more than a century. The women’s final is set for July 20, and the men’s final for July 29. New additions like flag football and squash will debut on July 15.

About 14 million tickets will go on sale, with officials confirming there will be no dynamic pricing to keep tickets affordable. Weather adjustments have also been made, with some events, including equestrian at Santa Anita Park, moved to cooler evening hours.

Further details for the Olympic football tournament and the Paralympic Games will be shared later, with ticket registration opening in January.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games schedule promises a historic, faster, fairer, and more inclusive event than ever before.
