Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed support for an appeal made by several former international captains seeking fair treatment for jailed former Pakistan cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan.
Speaking to reporters, Ganguly said he believed the appeal was justified and voiced hope for Khan’s recovery and well-being.
“I hope his health recovers and he gets the right treatment because he has taken Pakistan to the world map, first as captain of the Pakistan cricket team and then as Prime Minister of Pakistan. So I am sure he must be looked after and respected,” Ganguly said.
The remarks come after a group of former cricket captains from various countries reportedly wrote a letter to the Pakistan government, urging authorities to ensure fair treatment and proper medical care for Khan.
Ganguly, one of India’s most successful captains, emphasized Khan’s contribution to Pakistan both as a cricketer and as a political leader. Imran Khan led Pakistan to their historic 1992 Cricket World Cup triumph and later went on to serve as the country’s prime minister.
The statement has drawn attention on both sides of the border, given the long-standing cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. However, Ganguly’s comments focused on humanitarian concerns, underlining respect for Khan’s achievements and his stature in the sport.
The development adds an international dimension to the ongoing discussions surrounding Khan’s health and treatment, with prominent voices from the cricketing fraternity calling for dignity and proper care.
